My Road To Line Dancing

I’m a big country music fan and that’s the reason I began venturing out to country bars and dance halls in the first place. I did a lot of line dancing and two-stepping, met a lot of people, and really enjoyed myself.

Aside from learning “Footloose” in middle school PE class, the first time I ever witnessed line dancing was in Orange County, California in 2015. I was shocked at what I saw – more than thirty people on the dance floor laying down sophisticated dances, all in step, all in sync. Most were wearing cowboy boots and dancing to both country and pop songs. I stared at their feet in awe. They were moving, pivoting, and changing direction. I tried to jump in and follow, but I couldn’t keep up. I was so mesmerized that I came back for more. I started taking lessons and learning a dance or two per week.

Once I learned around six dances I noticed my balance getting better and my feet moving faster. I was now able to jump in almost any dance and learn it within 30-60 seconds, just by watching the feet of others. I was eventually dancing 5-6 nights per week and ultimately have learned more than forty dances since 2015.

In Southern California, there is a very large society of country dancers. Literally, hundreds of them. Some only do the two step, others only line dance, while some do both (me!!). There are some that don’t dance at all. However, it remains a community of people who all recognize how great this lifestyle is. Those who are a part of it know exactly what I’m talking about.

We do not like going to any social events (bars, parties, concerts) unless country dancing going on. And if it isn’t we will make it happen on our own. Imagine going to a high-end Martini bar in the city wearing cowboy boots, a buckle, and a cowboy hat.

We will certainly start a dance party if there isn’t one already happening.

I’ve wanted to move to Nashville for a while. I finally pulled the trigger in 2018 and made the move. My goal here is to share the delight of dancing with others. So that’s it Nashville, Saddle Up, Raise Your Cup, and Giddy-Up.
